A Porch Is A Great Addition To A Home
A porch is a wonderful place in which to step outside for awhile and take in the sights and sounds of the outdoors. It adds value to a home and is a great place to grill up some burgers for a fun cookout. Screened porches are nice in the summer, as they keep annoying bugs out of your face. If you don’t currently have a porch and are looking to erect one, there are some things to consider when having one added to your house.
Almost without exception, any new construction project will require a permit and inspections. You may obtain a local building permit by submitting a detailed construction plan, specs, and a sketch of the intended design. As you have probably guessed, a fee is required for processing. Several inspections may be required as well, also carrying a fee. Scheduling is important in this case because an inspector will need to review items such as footings and wiring before you may proceed past each step. A final inspection is often mandatory, so you can see how important scheduling is. It must be done, however, because it is against the law to complete the project without a permit and your homeowner’s insurance may become void.
Next, decide how the porch will line up to the house. It must be square, or else it will prove impossible to create flush walls and level entranceways. Attaching a guide board to the house is quite helpful. It needs to be the length of the porch, and batter boards should be placed at the corners of the future shed away from the house. A line is then run from them to the guide board, creating an outline of the porch. It is important that the porch resemble the existing house as much as possible for aesthetic reasons. Utilize the same roofing on the porch as on the house if possible. If not, try to find shingles that are as close in color and texture as you can. Carefully consider the optimum location as well, or you may experience inordinate glare from the sun and heavy doses of fallen leaves in the autumn. Try not to approach property lines too closely, or you may have issues with neighbors or with future fences if so desired.
With careful and proper planning, a new porch is a delight. It is a lovely home addition that accommodates fun and relaxation. Who knows? You may end up spending more time on the porch than in the house!
