Advice Learned From Our Last Remodel

Advice Learned From Our Last Remodel:

Rarely have I found a specific home improvement that was more enjoyable than my latest adventure. Everyone always seems to jump into a major kitchen project. But, since I am not flush with cash I decided it would be best to go for a bathroom remodel.

In hindsight I think it was a good move to start with the guest bathroom. While it is an important room in the house to have functioning it is not as critical as the master bath or the kitchen. I would recommend to everyone to start with this small room. This way you will get used to dealing with contractors, construction, and making decisions and have it all revolving around a relatively small project.

One thing I learned from this small project is that from now on I am going to buy the materials myself. For example, the toilet. The one my contractor installed was OK but not ideal. I went to Home Depot to check out the toilets and found one for $10 more that had dual flush and an elongated seat. It would have been a much better purchase. Lesson learned. Shop for your own materials. It is also ridiculously easy to save a lot of money with Lowes coupons ^(http://4freebie.org/lowes-coupons) that you should never do a project without them.

Through this little project I also learned that you cannot always take what your contractor recommends. I knew I wanted a mirror that had storage behind it inset into the wall. It was on the original contractor bid but the contractor kept trying to encourage a standard mirror without storage. I do not know what his aversion to the cabinet mirror was but it clearly was not something he wanted to do. It made me reflect on how so often we succumb to the pressure of the “professional” and end up with things that are not what we want. I have oftentimes let me gardener push me like this. Fortunately I stuck to my “guns” and got the extra storage. It is just a reminder to lead the project with your ideas, not the contractor’s.

I have to say the final product was beautiful. We put in a new maple vanity with an additional maple cabinet for linens. The mirror above the vanity included storage behind it so it functions as a lot of extra medicine cabinet space. The flooring was done with a nice tile and then to top it off we replaced the shower curtain. All in all it cost under $2,000 and it looks fantastic.

The story above is a recap of my very first project. Since then I have moved into the fix and flip of homes. I went through a lot of contractors but found one in Riverside that is a plumber as well as a general contractor. I found when I was looking for, plumbers riverside ca, it is funny that I was looking for a plumber in my city and found a great long term business partner. Maybe the same search will work for you in your city. Either way hopefully you take something from this article and it helps your next project run smoothly.
