Formula 1 Malaysian GP Sepang Stats and history

Some key statistics ahead of Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, plus a look back at previous races.

CIRCUIT

Laid out by German circuit designer Hermann Tilke on the site of a former oil palm plantation, Sepang Malaysia is an elegant track with a flowing grandstand roof built to resemble a hibiscus flower.

The track, built near the KLIA international airport and 85km from Kuala Lumpur, has a gentle uphill start with 15 turns and parallel straights.

High humidity, plus a climate that can change rapidly from sun to tropical downpour, makes it a strength-sapping race.

Typical ambient temperatures are more than 30 Celsius.

LAST FIVE RACES Results of Formula 1 Malaysian GP Sepang

2009 – Jenson Button (Brawn)

Button splashed to victory from pole position in a chaotic rain-shortened race. Half points were awarded for only the fifth time in F1 history because only 32 of the 56 laps had been completed.

2008 – Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)

Ferrari’s Massa started on pole but team mate Raikkonen took the lead at the first set of pitstops. McLaren’s Hamilton started ninth after he and team-mate Kovalainen were penalised for impeding rivals in qualifying.

2007 – Fernando Alonso (McLaren)

Alonso opened his McLaren account with that team’s first win since 2005. Hamilton made it a one-two in only his second race after an early skirmish with Massa that sent the Brazilian, who started on pole, skidding onto the grass.

2006 – Giancarlo Fisichella (Renault)

Fisichella led Alonso home to secure Renault’s first one-two finish in 24 years. Jenson Button was third for Honda. Massa started from the back of the grid but finished fifth.

2005 – Alonso (Renault)

Alonso handed Renault a second win in a row and became the first Spaniard to lead the championship. Trulli gave Toyota their first podium finish with second place.
