Portugal and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been named FIFA World Player of the Year at a ceremony held by world football’s governing body. Barcelona’s Argentine forward Lionel Messi was second and Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres third. Also on the shortlist for the prestigious award was Milan playmaker Kaka – winner of last year’s award – and Messi’s Barcelona team-mate Xavi, who was voted Euro 2008 Player of the Tournament by a UEFA panel.

Portugal winger Ronaldo, 23, won the honour for the first time after helping United win the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup.

The accolade also completed a hat-trick of top individual honours for Ronaldo, who had already won the football journalists’ Ballon d’Or trophy and the FIFPro World Player of the Year title voted for by his fellow professionals.

“It’s an overwhelming moment, very special,” said Ronaldo after receiving the award from Pele.

“I can say to my mother and sister, ‘let the fireworks off now’. It’s one of the most important moments in my life.”

Ronaldo is the first player based at an English club to win the FIFA award, which had previously gone only to footballers playing for Spanish or Italian sides.

“There may be no English players here but I believe it’s important for England that myself and Fernando Torres are here representing two English clubs,” said Ronaldo before the ceremony.

“It is a victory for the English fans as well because the Premier League is strong, even though we must not forget the leagues in Spain and Italy remain strong as well.”

The FIFA award is voted by the national team coaches and captains of the 208-member associations of world soccer’s governing body.

Ronaldo was voted in first place by 136 of the coaches and captains while 76 put Messi top.

The United player picked up 935 total points, ahead of 678 for Messi and 203 for Torres.

Brazilian striker Marta won the Women’s award for the third consecutive year, equaling the record of Germany’s Birgit Prinz, who finished second this time round with less than a third of the points (328) that Marta accrued (1,002). England’s Kelly Smith was fifth behind Cristiane and Nadine Angerer of Brazil and Germany respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo factfile

* Born on February 5 1985 in Funchal, Madeira Ronaldo’s late father Jose Dinis Aveiro gave him the second given name Ronaldo in honour of former US president Ronald Reagan.

* He began attracting attention at the age of 10 and both Madeira’s top teams Maritimo and Nacional scouted him. He played his youth football at Nacional before joining Sporting Lisbon, arch-rivals to his boyhood favourites Benfica.

* The turning point in his career came in July 2003 when he impressed Manchester United’s players and manager Alex Ferguson with an outstanding performance against them when United came to play in the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon. He joined Manchester United shortly afterwards aged just 18 for £12.5 million.

* Since then Ronaldo has scored 102 goals for Manchester United in 264 matches for the club.

* The winger enjoyed a highly successful 2007-08 season, scoring 42 goals in all competitions as United won a Premier League and Champions League double.

* His exploits led to him becoming only the second player to win England’s Footballer of the Year in successive seasons and just the third Portuguese player to win the Ballon d’Or award after Eusebio in 1965 and Luis Figo in 2000.

Finding a natural weight loss supplement that is genuine and works, can often feel impossible in this day and age. Especially when you factor in the growing number of diet pills that are currently available on the market. How can you differentiate between them all? Check our reviews, which supplements can offer your body the best results? Proactol or Acai Berry

Keeping this question at the forefront of our minds, we have compared all the leading brands in a bid to put a stop to all this uncertainty and offer consumers more. A genuine weight loss supplement that is guaranteed to give them the results they deserve. And we think we have found them: Proactol™ and Acai Berry supplements.

Health benefits of Proactol™

100% natural and formulated from the cactus Optunia ficus- indica, proactol™ is completely free from all forms of allergens, preservative and fillers and is clinically proven to:

Bind up to 28% of your daily fat intake

Suppress your appetite

Decrease your food cravings and meal portions

Lower cholesterol

Enhance joint flexibility and moveability

Cut your calorie consumption by 450 calories a day (up to 25% of your daily allowance)

Plus having completed 4 successful clinical trials, Proactol™ can proudly hold claim to its status of being a 100% side effect free product that has got the medical backing of the Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC to match it.

*For more details on all Proactol™ ’s clinical trials and studies visit <noindex>www.proactol.com</noindex>

Health benefits of Acai Berry

Renowned for being enriched in Vitamins A, C, and E and for containing anti-oxidants, Acai Berry supplements are 100% natural and have been found to:

Burn fat more effectively by combining the bodies natural fatty acids, phytosterols and amino acids together

Boost energy levels and metabolism

Replenish the skin and reduce aging

Alongside its natural weight loss qualities, Acai Berry supplements can also help users to experience improved digestive functions and circulation; a healthier heart and cholesterol levels, plus has been linked to the prevention of cancer.

For more details on the variety of Acai Berry’s health benefits, please visit: <noindex>http://www.projectswole.com/diet/acai-berry-the-new-weight-loss-superfood/</noindex>

With them both offering users 100% natural ingredients and weight loss, Proactol™ and Acai Berry supplements have certainly got a lot to offer. Increased health and vitality; a healthier body both on the inside and on the outside, plus an accessible route for all to easy natural weight loss – consider all these benefits and Proactol™ and Acai Berry are equally beneficial.

Users who have incorporated these supplements into a nutritious diet, whilst exercising regularly have all experienced a steady weight loss of 1-2lbs a week.

But after examining their clinical trials more extensively, Acai offered some shocking results. Namely in the Acai’s side effects and additional health problems.

Are Acai Berry supplements safe?

To a degree they are. The only disputable factor about this supplement is the fact that a number of recent studies have found that all Acai’s medical claims are contradictory and wrong.

Take for example their statement that the anti-oxidants in Acai Berry can help reduce aging, prevent cancer and lower heart problems. In studies done by the University College of London, the John Hopkins School of Medicine and Copenhagen researchers, every one of these claims has been found to be false and in truth can cause the opposite effect.

University College of London: found there was no proof that anti-oxidants prevented aging

John Hopkins school of Medicine: 4% of subjects who took high dosages of Vitamin E were at a higher risk of dying, whilst 13% had an increased chance of experiencing heart failure.

Copenhagen Researchers: 6% of subjects who took high dosages of Vitamin A, C and E were found to be at a higher risk of developing colon, liver and pancreatic cancer.

With statistics like these it is hard to trust this supplement. Especially when all its possible health problems are directly comparable to its benefits. They all seem to tell the opposite story.

Proactol™ vs. Acai Berry supplements– which can offer
consumers more?

View these supplements for their claims alone, and they are both very promising weight loss supplements. But add to the equation statistics, clinical trials and studies, and the differences between Proactol™ and Acai Berry supplements are profound.

100% reliable and side effect free, Proactol™ has successfully proven itself time and time again during its clinical trials for being true to its word. Here in one supplement users can experience the confidence of knowing that they can continue to use Proactol™ for as long as they need.

There is no restriction to how long users can benefit from its range of natural health benefits – lower cholesterol and increased joint flexibility – nor any limit to what they use Proactol™ for.

Whether they seeking to lose some extra lbs or maintain their current weight, users are in safe hands.

This is not to say that Acai Berry has got nothing to offer. 100% natural, Acai Berry’s active ingredients work within the body to help promote natural weight loss at a pace that is suitable for users.

Yet despite these many bonuses, it is impossible to ignore the many health complications and risks that can arise from this supplement. Even if there is only a 13% chance of experiencing heart failure, no risk is acceptable when it comes to your health.

And with many of Acai Berry’s claims being discounted, the reliability and usability of this supplement is one that comes with risk.

Proactol™ 100% pure and risk free

So if you are searching for a supplement that can offer your body genuine weight loss with none of the complications, we recommend Proactol™ 100%. With no known side effects or risks, Proactol™ can offer users a route to weight loss that is not only simple, but safe.

Spain’s glorious triumph at Euro 2008 was one of the stories of the year, and the manner of victory played its part in the makeup of Yahoo! Sports’ Best XI from the last 12 months.

Four members of the Spanish squad that won the country’s first major tournament in four decades made the list, which was based on performances during 2008 for club and country.

Narrowing things down to just 11 standout performers in domestic, continental and international action was no easy task. But here is our selection of the stars that rose to the top in 2008.

Goalkeeper

• Iker Casillas (Country: Spain, Club: Real Madrid). Casillas was inspirational at Euro 2008 and maintained his exceptional standards despite Real’s recent struggles.

Defenders

• Maicon (Brazil, Inter Milan). He is the best right back in the world and a pivotal figure for Inter. Fiery and competitive, Maicon is one of Serie A’s shining lights.

• Rio Ferdinand (England, Manchester United). Possibly the best defender on the planet, Ferdinand helped United to an English Premier League-UEFA Champions League double and shows no sign of letting his standards slip.

• Nemanja Vidic (Serbia, Manchester United). Vidic doesn’t get as many plaudits as teammate Ferdinand, but his technical excellence and consistency demands his inclusion in this team.

• Yuri Zhirkov (Russia, CSKA Moscow). Zhirkov made Europe sit up and take notice in the summer, with his powerful forward runs, crossing ability and resolute defensive skills.

Midfielders

• Cesc Fabregas (Spain, Arsenal). Fabregas held together an Arsenal team that was in danger of falling apart and was a key component of the brilliant Spain midfield at the Euros.

• Xavi (Spain, Barcelona). For years one of the most underrated players in Europe, the 28-year-old got the sort of attention he deserves with the Euro 2008 player of the tournament award.

• Esteban Cambiasso (Argentina, Inter Milan). Cambiasso provides an imposing barrier in front of the Inter back four and has put together the best individual year of his career.

Attackers

• Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal, Manchester United). Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Ronaldo will become an all-time legend like Pele and Maradona. A few more years like the one he compiled for United with 42 goals in ‘08 will help lift him up to that exalted status.

• Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona). The little man is thrilling to watch and just keeps getting better. The 21-year-old has all the tricks and skills to go with a fierce competitive spirit.

• Fernando Torres (Spain, Liverpool). Torres made a huge impact after joining Liverpool and is arguably now the most feared striker in world soccer.
