They say, it was established by Ferdinand Magellan upon his arrival in the island. The Cross is sacred for Filipino Christians, because it is considered to represent the birth of their faith. In the 19th century the Cross was moved to the chapel and placed in the wooden case, where it is guarded. This protects the Cross from visitors, who snip away pieces from it.
There is also a Minor Basilica of the Holy Infant nearby, where you can find the first religious image of the country, the Santo Nino. Each year the Santo Nino is praised during the famous Sinulog festival that takes place in the country. A special dance is performed, which mimics the river, in the honor of the Infant Jesus.
