Cultivating A Resplendent Lawn Is Not Just Good For Your Family But Good For The Environment
The environment is fighting predicaments ranging from global warming to failing ozone layer.
A simple way you can assist the environment is by growing and maintaining a lawn in your garden. Growing a grassed area in your garden is basically very easy.
Your grass is a significant component of our ecosystem and it is believed that grassland covers more than 30 million acres in the USA alone. Lawns offer huge benefits to our ecosystem and play an important part in keeping our environment healthy.
How does a healthy grassland help the environment?
Grass turns carbon dioxide into oxygen. In some cases, the grassed area near the house can produce most of the oxygen we breathe. A 50′ by 50′ area of grass can provide enough oxygen for a family of four every day.
Grasslands help reduce the heat island effect often felt in our urban areas. Lawns cut down energy consumption via it’s cooling effects. On average eight medium-sized lawns have the cooling power of 70 tons of air conditioning. On average a US house uses 2-4 tons of air conditioning. Air temperatures on the grass are much more cooler than over built up areas.
Frequently we decline to consider how crucial the grassed area is in our garden. When your lawn is in excellent health it will be a lush green. To get it glowing with health, and to keep it looking good requires some care, in the same way as we do with other garden plants. To keep the grassed areas resplendent and vigorous, you need to give it the same management as the rest of the garden.
You must know how to plant it and what is the right place. Before anything else find a clutter free place that has no trees nearby and is with restricted access for pet dogs or other animals. In the summer there should be at least a half day of direct sun on the lawn.
To make ready your desired location for sowing you need to break up the top 5-10 cm of soil. Depending on what you are creating you should level the ground and sieve out any stones. Remember you need to mow the lawn later so clear away any large obstacles.
After that, we must carry out the seeding. The usual method, is done by hand. For very large areas you can hire a spreader from your local tool rental store. Then you have to mark out the area to be sown with stakes and cord. Alternatively you could use sand to mark the planting area. Build up bands of one meter wide for the length of the area needed.
The quantity of seed to be scattered varies from to less fertile soil. In the first case scatter 20g of seed per m2. With less rich soil you should use twice as much. There may be variations on the type of seeds you are planting so read the specific information on the package.
The seed must be spread as evenly as it possible can be over the whole area to be grassed and then rolled so as to compact the soil and create a nice flat area.
You can also use turfs or sods. These are chunks of already grown grass that have been removed from the ground and rolled up into reasonable sized lengths. Usually, it has around 2 centimetres of soil attached. With these, you can create an instant grassed area. This is normally a useful option for gullies etc. where rainfall and watering can erode the surface and make it awkward to grow an even lawn from seed.
Grass is best sown in the early spring but can be started any time into mid-summer. Do not scatter seeds if it might be very hot and sunny as this can be exceedingly harmful to young grass. Especially if not watered appropriately and every day.
You will also need somewhere to keep your lawn mower secure and a cheap shed ^(http://www.cheapshed.net) is ideal. Looking for used sheds in the local classifieds is often a great solution
