DIY – How To Repair A Burst Pipe In Your Home
No one wants to have to deal with a burst water pipe, but as annoying as it is when it happens, it can be relatively easy to fix. We’ve put together this guide to take you through the different options of how to repair your burst pipe. The first thing you should always do is stop any more damage taking place, so turn off your water supply. Then clear a space so you have easy access to the damaged pipe.
As long as the hole in the pipe is fairly small, you won’t need to replace the pipe. You can instead use something called slip-on coupling. The first thing to do is to cut away the small section of damaged pipe. Then you cover the damage using the slip-on coupling. Next, create a watertight seal by tightening nuts at either end. This will stop the pipe from moving around once the water has been turned back on and should stop any further leaks.
If you are dealing with a hole larger than 2 inches, it will be necessary to use a replacement section of pipe to fix the damage. Cut away the section with the hole in it and then secure compression couplers to the edges of the remaining pipe. You then insert the ends of the new pipe into the compression couplers, whose job is to secure the new pipe. Next, make the section watertight by tightening the nuts on the compression, although be careful you don’t over-tighten it.
Probably the easiest way to replace a section of burst pipe is to use what’s known as the push-fit system. This basically entails replacing the burst section with a purpose-made special repair pipe. Here, you won’t have to worry about using the right sort of pipe or fiddling with compression couplings. You simply cut away the damage from the pipe, and then use the specially-made push-fit pipe to plug the gap. It should fit on easily to create a watertight seal.
It can often be a good idea to get a plumber to check your work for you if you’re unsure about the quality of your repair, or even ask them to replace the pipe for you if you don’t feel confident doing it yourself. All good plumbers will know exactly what they’re doing. It also pays to avoid burst pipes in the first place. Make sure your pipes don’t freeze due to expanding ice in the winter by ensuring that you leave your heating on.
