If you’re like me, then you have hundreds of do-it-yourself projects around the house to complete. But how do you decide on which project to start first? There is a simple way to figure out which projects should get top priority. I usually work from two lists. One list has easy projects that can be done in an afternoon, like painting a room or planting bulbs in the fall. The other list is what I call the investment list. These projects are more time consuming and may, but not always, cost a little more. These are projects that may take a 3-day weekend to complete. Perhaps, I may even have to call over my friends to help. But the more complex projects on the honey-do list don’t scare me away in these economic times, and they shouldn’t scare you either.
When deciding on what project to tackle, think about it in terms of an investment. These are the items I like to complete first because they will pay me back over time. The sooner it’s complete, the sooner it starts to pay for itself. For example, replacing your home’s windows would qualify as an investment. The point in these two examples is to remember to find a project which will serve multiple purposes. For instance, these improvements either enhance the look of your home’s exterior, provide energy efficiency or create new livable space for your home. They’re also relatively less expensive to complete when compared to the alternative solutions. They can also be done by a handy homeowner and their friends. Although, installers are available to lend their expertise, as well.
Investing in your home can take on many different looks. Replacing appliances, windows and doors, flooring, countertops, etc. all have their place and should be considered. It is then up to the homeowners to balance their needs and wants carefully, as they decide on what improvement to embark upon. However, with a little forethought and planning, it is possible to accomplish both, while sticking to your budget. You just have to know what your options are.
