Tidying Up After Home Improvement Projects
Objects experience wear and tear as time goes on with normal use, and houses are not immune. Paint begins to flake off and roofs break down. Sometimes we simply become bored with how our homes look. Home improvement is a fact of owning a home, whether to fix a problem or to freshen things up a bit. Waste products are part of the task, and clearing up after a large home improvement project is not as bad as it may seem if you follow some simple guidelines.
Large improvement projects involving the interior usually end up with a fresh coat of paint. In this case, preventive maintenance is the key. Remove the furniture from the area first, which you may well have done before undertaking the project to begin with. Anything that cannot be removed needs to be covered with plastic. If, upon completion you find that some stray drop of paint found its way to the carpet, there is no need to buy new. A paint blob that has settled on the very top of the fibers may simply be cut off, being careful not to cut the carpet itself. Using warm water and blotting is effective for paint that has crept below the surface. Blunt-edged knives are also effective at scraping the droplets off.
Heaps of waste often result from major home improvements such as lumber, drywall, and shingles. Lay down tarps all over the yard near the project you are performing. That will help catch any stray pieces of metal and splinters that fall off the waste materials. It also makes it easier to drag to the dumpster if you have a clear path to one. It should go without saying, but wear safety gloves when removing any of the waste so that you don’t cut yourself. Once the larger pieces have been removed, go over the area with a nail magnet to pick up stray metal that could become lodged in lawnmower tires or your feet.
A wonderful method by which to clean up is by hiring a rubbish skip. This is a metal container that looks like a dumpster with an open top. Once filled to the top, it is hauled away on the back of a lorry and replaced with another if needed. Their smaller size also enables better maneuvering in confined spaces. Clearing up after a large home improvement project may take a little time, but it does not need to take a lot of effort. Take precautions before you begin, and the cleanup will be that much easier.
