Toilet Renovation Wasn’t As Difficult As I Had Expected
I’ve been working on my rental dwelling now for a few years but it surely wasn’t till this previous Dec/09 that I really got into the “spirit” of renovating the home by renovating my bathroom. An entire intestine and haul out for a significant makeover kind of renovation job.
With the transferring in of my Uncle at the end of Nov, whereas he recovers from the foremost most cancers therapies he received for forty five days straight I found that my 1 bathroom wasn’t going to work. Not for a 72 yr younger man who couldn’t raise his leg up excessive sufficient to get into a bath and never even sufficient room to turn around within the rest room, not to mention dry off, costume and brush your hair.
It was an outdated, smelly and wayyy previous it’s prime type of bathroom that wanted a significant makeover. The colors in there were originally Lime green tiles and white walls, cream coloured bathtub (not due to the paint however reasonably age) and sink. Oh and of course we will not neglect that lovely gold flecked off white lino on the ground that had extra cracks in it then one thing with crackle paint on it!
I had wanted to renovate the toilet for five years (that is how long I have lived on this place). My husband would don’t have anything to do with the adjustments I wanted. Stating that the landlord wouldn’t permit it. Was he improper!
Upon my uncle beginning to really feel extra his previous contractor self (minus the power and stamina) agreed with me that it wanted doing. He needed to just repair the partitions around the tub and do one thing about the counter and sink area, that was so gross. I talked him into the thought of placing a nook shower stall in instead. Not mentioning that it could be a lot simpler for him to get into, but mentioned it could give us extra room within the bathroom. After much deliberation and discussion, he started chipping away at the walls around the tub and realized just how much rot there was. He realized I knew what I was talking about when it got here to what actually needed to be done.
We gutted the toilet completely. He and I did it in 2 days, with the help of my husband who came to assist me roll out the outdated cast iron bathtub that was too heavy for me to lift.
As we started tearing out the sink, tub cabinets, cabinets and flooring, we noticed simply what was making the stink. The bathroom had been leaking for years! Again, I love when I’m right:) My husband realized that I wasn’t trying to be tough about what needed to be finished however relatively for the sake of our well being, my sanity and the landlords pocket e book this room needed a serious repair, fix and update.
We minimize away the walls across the tub to switch the rotten drywall from the leaking bathtub pipes and found we needed to substitute the pipes, drains and dry wall. We needed to even exchange the sink plumbing as effectively due to corrosion and rust within the pipes. Galvanized pipes aren’t the very best thing to have in a home, that’s the reason we have now plastic ones now. Trendy is sometimes better.
My Uncle and I didn’t substitute the wooden floors within the rest room though. We looked at all the things that had been water broken and felt that each floors (sure, two flooring one in all outdated Thirties and one from 1960s all hardwoods) were just fine. We repaired around the toilet it’s self and I sealed the whole floor in a stopz sealer. It sealed the ground so properly that when it was dry, the wooden floor was hard once more, not tender close to the bathtub or sink. We then put an attractive dark grey and brown floating foam backed lino down on the floor.
After the plumbing was replaced and new drywall up, I mud and painted the bathroom. Then in went the pedestal sink, nook bathe and the toilet. What a distinction it was just with those changes. The lavatory felt clear and once you had a bathe in there you didn’t feel like you wanted another one!
I’ve added a free standing white shelving unit to match every part in there. Nevertheless, to make sure it wasn’t to “institutional” feeling I put in a dark brown framed oval mirror over the sink, a small handmade bench that my uncle made that I stained dark. A number of completely different sized dark baskets and a few darkish and lightweight brown towels, bathe mats, etc.
By incorporating door knobs to hold towels on as a substitute of a rack. I did this so we could have extra room to hang towels for everyone but also as a result of it introduced within the nostalgia of the era that the house had been constructed in. The handles and taps on the sink are also previous fashion in step with the feel I have been attempting to hold all through the house.
My household says that going in the lavatory now looks like they are in a spa or resort bathroom. Hee hee I had to snigger at that. But they largely like that it smells higher in there and extra room! I like that after I clean the toilet now, it actually feels and smells clean in there.
We confirmed the landlord and his wife what we needed to do in the toilet and they saw all the images of the water injury, the pipes that were corroded and rusting away along with how serious the plumbing was getting. They asked for receipts and once I confirmed them that I actually spent lower than a $a thousand on giving the toilet an overhaul, they have been shocked. They paid for the whole lot immediately and said that it was an excellent job!
My husband was very shocked that they might pay for it, however he could not argue with that!
Evidently my household may be very appreciative of the fact that in any case my complaining and fussing about the terrible toilet, they’re now showering and dressing in a sterile, clear environment. As you possibly can see in my photograph albums of the before and after, there is a great deal of improvement in there.
So ladies, I would like you to know that anybody can do these renovations and make changes in their homes. I have been learning quite a bit with the assistance of my uncle.
