Types Of Bricks

Types Of Bricks:

Though they may look the same to the uneducated eye, each type of brick its own characteristics and properties…

1) Common Bricks

The term ‘common brick’ comes from the fact that, although they are fired hard enough to use for most purposes, they are of a lower quality than most other types of brick. No attempt is made to control their color, and their composition is such that they should not be used below ground.

2) Engineering Bricks

An engineering brick goes through an elaborate process of clay selection, careful crushing, firing and molding, to make it a very hard brick indeed. They can take a lot more wear and tear than other types of bricks and have a low rate of water absorption. For the underground parts of structures, they are essential, as they are the most damp-resistant type of brick.

3) Facing Bricks

These bricks are the ‘face’ of a building, meaning that they are what you see when you look at most buildings. They are hard burned to give them strength and durability, which they need to withstand varying temperatures and extreme weather conditions. There are various sub-categories of facing bricks, with each variant being tailored to meet the demands and conditions of the location where it will be used.

4) Special Bricks

These bricks are used to add finishing touches to a building or structure. If you are prepared to pay a premium, then you can get a brick in practically any shape that you want it. You can also normally get them made in whatever color you want, and have effects, such as aging or polished, applied to them.

5) Concrete Blocks

As well as bricks, there are all sorts of concrete blocks that can be used for similar purposes. They are easy to shape into whatever form you want them in and plain ones can be painted or rendered. Many are given a finish to make them look like natural stone.

It is impossible to say which of the above types of bricks is best because different ones excel in different circumstances. If you are unsure about which ones to use, then ask for advice from an employee at your local brick merchant. They will know for sure which bricks are best for the structure that you are building.
