Types Of Door Locks
When it comes to door locks and security, there’s one lock which is so secure that it often falls foul of health and safety laws. If you ask me, that’s almost a recommendation. The deadbolt works by throwing across a solid bolt from the lock housing into the frame of the door. This type of lock is practically impenetrable and stops people prying the door open. As the lock is practically impossible to break without easy access to a key, escape in a fire or emergency where the key is not readily obtainable can be tricky.
For residential or office installation, the mortise lock is often used. This type of lock requires the mortise to be cut into the door and the lock is fitted inside. The rectangular bolt extends into a recess within the door frame. In the US, lever mechanisms are often favored over cylinders containing pin tumbler locking mechanisms – the favored style in some UK office buildings.
What could be cooler than having a keyless entry system? It’s the ultimate in security convenience with audio and visual indicators letting you know when the lock is activated or deactivated. The user enters a locking and unlock code – much like a conventional alarm – to deadbolt the door, making it practically impenetrable by intruders. Some models will even activate an alarm if you enter the code incorrectly. Some keyless entry systems can be remote operated for added convenience.
Privacy locks are ideal for home privacy and use on doors such as bathrooms and bedrooms. The lock can only be activated and deactivated from the inside, although it can be unlocked from the outside in an emergency if needs be. For this reason, the lock is practically useless as a security measure and should not be used as such. Privacy locks are very easily fitted using a couple of common tools and do not need any specialist intervention.
Warded locks offer a good level of basic security and utilize the common obstruction and notch principle. The lock contains a number of obstructions which are matched to notches and slots in the key. When these notches fit around the obstructions, the key can be turned inside the lock and the door can be unlocked. This particular type of lock is one of the oldest still in use today which is testament to its longevity. It should not, however, be used on external doors or in high security environments.
