When installing solar panels, there are a couple of different techniques you can employ. The panels may be flush with the roof or you may wish to tilt them up at an angle. It has been advised that it is easier to place solar panels flush while the roof is being redone. Because the shingles and tar paper are gone during reroofing, the trusses and rafters are out in the open and things can be cut and configured to accommodate the panels. Being able to firmly place the panels into the roof in this manner greatly reduces the risk of water leakage.
If you plan on mounting solar panels on your roof and are not concerned with placing them flush with the roof, you must locate the rafters. Stud finders do this job quite effectively. A pilot hole must be drilled into the rafter to prevent splintering. Chalk lines and laser sights are good methods that will keep the line of mounts in line. Using the pilot hole, fasten the mounts to the rafters using lag bolts. The rails that will hold the actual panels are then laid upon the mounts and secured to them with 3/8” bolts. All fasteners utilized should be made of stainless steel to prevent rusting.
The mechanics of installing solar panels on your roof aren’t much different than mounting anything else, but there are special considerations you must make. Place them so that they absorb as much sun as possible. Directly under the sun at noon is optimal. Do not install them where taller surrounding objects will obstruct sunlight and trim overhanging branches that would get in the way of sun absorption.
Installing solar panels on your roof is a good way to place less strain on the grid and lower your energy bills. You will also alleviate dependence on fossil fuels and lower your carbon footprint. Solar panels don’t cost a dime while collecting free sunlight.
