Why Extracurricular Activities Are Good For Kids

Why Extracurricular Activities Are Good For Kids:

Many children participate in organized activities outside of school hours. Whether it’s an art class, a sports team or a social club, there are many benefits of extracurricular activities. Many parents enroll their kids in these activities some of the time, mostly because the kids’ friends are involved or it sounds like fun, but it’s worth taking some time to find out what options are out there for your children.

One very important thing for any parent to consider, is that most crime among youths, takes place in the hours following their release from school. Children who have somewhere to go and something to do after school have less unsupervised time on their hands, so they’re less likely to get involved with the wrong crowd. Many bad crowds are out there, and in great number too.

Once a child has made friends with these kids and joined their social circle, he’s much more likely to get into trouble with them. One fear is that they could become involved in illegal activities. Out of all of these activities, you should be quite concerned about drug use in particular. Kids seem to be experimenting with drugs at younger and younger ages. The sooner they start, the more time they have to ruin their lives before they even get started. Sadly, many kids develop a drug problem long before they graduate high school.

Most organized activities, whether the activity is sports related, educational, or social teach kids two very important things. These are a sense of competition and motivation. These two skills will make your child more of a full rounded person, and also follow them long into adulthood. A kid with well rounded interests and pursuits is likely to perform better at school and avoid getting involved in trouble.

It takes time, thought and money to enroll your kids in extracurricular activities. Many parents have a very busy schedule. Not only do we have to do our jobs well, but when we come home we have a lot on our plates just with the house, kids, homework, etc. Outside activities for the kids place an additional demand on our time. Our children’s lives will be just as busy when they grow up. Managing to balance their schoolwork, responsibilities at home and outside activities will be a good thing for them to learn. This is another skill that is going to follow them well into the rest of their life.

If the activity that a child is participating in involves any type of sport, please consider that your child will be getting plenty of exercise after school. Children who get used to exercising and staying in shape are much more likely to carry that habit into adulthood. Keeping their bodies in shape has so many benefits that it practically goes without saying.

Don’t forget the most obvious benefit of organized sports and classes: having fun with friends. Your child probably works very hard to maintain the type of grades that you expect, so let them experience something that they can enjoy before they go home and begin working on any homework assignments that they might have.

It is now hoped that the reader is able to properly understand why Extracurricular Activities Are Good for Kids. If your child is already involved in something positive, do everything you can to encourage his interest and keep him involved through middle school and high school.
